How To Series: Styling Built-Ins
We love connecting with you on our platforms and often get DM's in our instagram page asking design questions, the most popular one being “How do I style my built-in”. I know it can be overwhelming and sometimes frustrating when you don't get the right the first time, listen we don't either- it's a lot of trial and error.
Here are a few tips to help ease your frustration and hopefully make styling your shelving FUN!
Start With A Clean Slate:
Before you begin decorating, empty your built-ins and give them a good cleaning. This gives you a fresh canvas to work with. Take a moment to assess the size and proportions of the shelves. This will guide your choice of decor items and how you arrange them.
2. Coose A Color Palette | Vibe
Deciding on a color palette and vibe will help create cohesion across your shelves. Opt for a mix of neutral tones with pops of color, or stick to a monochromatic scheme. This will make it easier to select items that complement each other.
3. Layer With Books!
A mix of vertical & horizontal stacking will create visual interest. Place larger books upright, creating a clean line. Bookends add definition to the shelf and make it feel complete. Top off horizontal layouts with a bowl, candle, or small tray for a layered feel.
4. Pictures For Personality
Use a mix of small, medium, and large frames. This adds visual interest and creates a dynamic display. Alternate between landscape and portrait orientations to keep the arrangement lively.
5. Incorporate Vases + Candles
xVases and candles can bring an organic feel to your shelves.
Vary Heights: Use candlesticks of varying heights or layer different-sized vases to create depth. This keeps the eye moving across the display.
6. Baskets For Texture + Functionality
Group baskets of varying sizes together to create a layered look. Space throughout the shelves for balance.
Use Natural Materials: Woven baskets add warmth and can soften the overall appearance of your built-ins.
7. Styling In Groups Or Alone
Solo Items: Use larger statement pieces, such as a large vase or an oversized sculpture, on their own to draw attention.
Pairs and Threes: Use pairs for symmetry—like two identical vases—or threes to create visual triangles. This is especially effective with smaller decor items or candles.
Styling built-ins can be a creative and rewarding process. By incorporating a variety of decor items and understanding the principles of grouping, you can create a space that reflects your personality and enhances your home.
When in doubt, less is more.
Remember to experiment, trust your instincts, and most importantly, have fun with the process!
